Monterotondo Maritime rises in the north-western province of Grosseto, near the border with the province of Pisa. Originally the medieval town was an ancient possession of Monteverdi dell'Abbazia Marine, later became owned by the family Alberti. During the thirteenth century the centre came under the control of Massa Marittima, sold during the mid-fourteenth century and annexed to the Republic of Siena. It was Siena domain until the mid-sixteenth century with the annexation to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
